Quite possibly my favorite native plant, Beautyberry's long, arching branches bear soft pink flowers followed by stunning purple berries that hug each branch in clusters in fall and winter.
Extremely hardy and easy to care for, all the American Beautyberry requires is lots of sun and moist, but not wet, soil. The berries are excellent for wildlife, and are edible (though not very tasty) to humans as well. It also makes a perfect cut flower once the berries are ripe and the leaves are removed or have fallen in autumn. It will be one of the last plants to leaf out in the spring, so be patient - its worth it.
This large shrub usually reaches 6 feet tall and wide, but in an ideal enviroment may get to 10'x10'. Cutting it back to 1-2' above the ground each winter will help keep its size in check and promote berries.
- USDA Hardiness Zones 6-10
