Cucurbita moschata

Considered rare, this Japanese pumpkin is not only gorgeous, but absolutely delicious with soft, tender skin and buttery, firm, orange flesh. This one can even be served raw! Julliene into slaw for a real treat.

Black Futsu ripens in storage, so be sure to store it somewhere cool and dry until it's skin changes from black/deep green to chestnut-orange brown.

'mochata' varieties are much more hardy and disease resistant than other types of squash. If you think you can't grow it because of squash bugs, vine borers, or mildew, try a moschata! I think you'll be pleased.
